Although people in the West will be celebrating the New Year on December 31st, people in China and other Asian countries will be celebrating it on February 1st. This is due to the Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, celebrated by 1/4 of the world's population. It is celebrated for 16 days, and it ends with the Lantern Festival. It is a huge celebration with the world’s largest firework display. During this period, people usually exchange gifts, such as tea, tea sets, alcohol, clothing, or toys, as well as red envelopes with good luck wishes for the New Year or small amounts of money. However, like every other country, China also has its superstitions. For instance, it is considered bad luck washing hair or clothes, or sweeping the house and taking out the garbage during this time, as it symbolizes getting rid of your good luck. It is also considered bad luck if you cry, go to hospitals or wear black.
If you ever have the opportunity, go visit China during the Spring Festival. It’s a beautiful event and you are sure to have a good time!
